What do you remember about the Cambridge Reporter?
The newspaper closed Sept. 19, 2023, after 157 years of serving Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair, which were amalgamated into the City of Cambridge in 1973.
At the time, it was believed to be the oldest newspaper operating in Canada, but I’m still trying to confirm that detail.
I worked at the Reporter for 17 years, as a reporter, photographer, and editor. I was the newspaper’s last Managing Editor. I locked the doors as the last employee, after packaging up photos, negatives, clipping files, and history items and for delivery to the City of Cambridge Archives.
This post shares the presentation I gave on Sept. 19, 2023, on the 20th anniversary of the newspaper’s closing. The event was hosted by IdeaExchange, in the Old Post Office digital library – across the street from where the newspaper’s last address at 26 Ainslie St. S.
When I worked at the Reporter in the late 1980s, the historic Post Office building was a bar and nightclub – the Time Club. I remember sitting on the balcony at the Time Club late on a summer afternoon, looking over the river, and drinking a cold beer after a day of work at The Reporter.
